Breath of the Wild takes place at the end of the Zelda timeline in the kingdom of Hyrule. An amnesiac warrior named Link awakens in the Shrine of Resurrection and encounters the spirit of King Rhoam, who explains that Link has been slumbering for a century. The king narrates the history of Hyrule, including the ancient Sheikah civilization, the Divine Beasts, and the Champions who piloted them. When Calamity Ganon appeared, he possessed the Guardians and Divine Beasts, killing the Champions and gravely wounding Link. Princess Zelda unlocked her sealing powers, saved Link, and sealed herself with Ganon in Hyrule Castle.
